3-Ingredient Rolo Turtles with Pretzels (Ready in 15 Minutes)

Rolo pretzel turtles are a 3-ingredient holiday candy made with mini pretzels, Rolo chocolates, and pecan halves. They take 15 minutes start to finish, and they taste exactly like a salty-sweet caramel turtle, but without any candy thermometer or fuss.

This is one of the easiest recipes that disappear first from the holiday tray. Kids can help make them, they package beautifully for gifts, and you can prep a big batch in under 30 minutes. I’ve been making these every Christmas for years, and they never last more than a day in our house.

If you love salty-sweet candy, you need these easy treats on your list alongside our chocolate covered cherries recipe and homemade caramel corn.

Why This Recipe Works

The magic here is is that you’re not fully melting the Rolos, just softening them so the pecan can press in and bond everything together. That’s what gives you the chewy caramel center and clean chocolate exterior instead of a gooey mess.

  • Flavor: Chocolate, caramel, and salty pretzel in every single bite
  • Texture: Crunchy pretzel base, creamy set chocolate, chewy caramel center, and crunchy pecans on top
  • Time: 10 minutes of prep, 5 minutes in the oven, done
  • Skill level: Completely beginner-friendly. If you can unwrap candy and press a nut, you can make these. Try our slow cooker turtles, too.

You’ll also love our pumpkin bread, chocolate caramel cookies, and apple pie. And during the holidays try my grandma’s Christmas cookies!

Rolo Pretzel Ingredients

You’ll need just 3 simple ingredients for this easy recipe:

  • Pretzels. Use mini pretzels that are traditional shape or square.
  • Rolos. Rolos are widely available so it is a great candy to use. You could use another caramel filled candy such as Dove chocolates or Milky Way Simply Caramel.
  • Pecans. Use pecan halves so they are easy to press into the melted chocolate.

Which kind of pretzels work best?

Any mini pretzel works for rolo turtles, but the shape changes the experience. Waffle pretzels (square grid style) give you a flat, stable base that holds the Rolo centered and looks polished.

We use waffle pretzels because they stack neatly for gifting and the flat surface means the Rolo sits perfectly every time.

How to Make Rolo Pretzel Turtles

  1. Preheat the oven to 300ºF. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Lay the square pretzels (or other mini pretzels) down on the prepared pan in a single layer. Place an unwrapped Rolo candy on top of each pretzel.
  3. Place a pecan half on top of the Rolo candy. You can do this after if you’d like, but the pecans I typically do it all at once.
  4. Bake for 4-5 minutes in the preheated oven or until the chocolate is soft.
  5. Press the pecan down into the chocolate candy. Or if you did not before, place a pecan on top of each of the Rolos and press slightly.

How to Know When Rolo Turtles Are Done

This is the most common question and the most important tip. You’re not trying to melt the Rolo completely. Bake at 300°F for 4 to 5 minutes, then gently touch the side of one Rolo. If it gives slightly when pressed, pull the pan. The chocolate should look shiny and soft but the Rolo should still hold its basic shape.

If you go too long, the caramel spreads out and the chocolate can turn grainy when it sets. When in doubt, check at 4 minutes.

Recipe Variations

  • Drizzle the rolo turtles with white chocolate for a contrast.
  • Top with hershey’s kisses, mini reese’s peanut butter cups or Hershey hugs and an M&M instead of a Rolo and pecan.
  • Use chopped pecans and place a second pretzel on top while the chocolate is still melted for a pretzel sandwich.

Storage and Make-Ahead Tips

Store rolo turtles in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. They also freeze well for up to 6 weeks. Let them thaw completely before opening the container so condensation doesn’t make them sticky.

For gifting: Layer them in a tin between sheets of wax paper. They hold their shape well and look beautiful. Make a double or triple batch the week before Christmas and you’ll have gifts covered.

Make ahead: These are one of the best make-ahead holiday candies because they actually improve after a day. The chocolate sets firmer and the caramel chewy center comes through more clearly.

How long do you bake Rolo pretzel turtles?

Bake at 300°F for 4 to 5 minutes, just until the chocolate is soft enough to press a pecan in. You’re softening, not melting. Check at 4 minutes.

What’s the easiest way to melt Rolos on pretzels?

The oven is the most reliable method for rolo turtles. The low temperature (300°F) softens them evenly without burning. You can also use the microwave in 10-second bursts, but the oven gives more consistent results across a whole tray.

Can I make Rolo turtles without pecans?

Yes. Press an M&M into the top instead, or use a walnut half, a cashew, or skip the nut entirely and add a second pretzel on top for a pretzel sandwich. See the variations section above for more ideas.

What are pretzels with Rolos called?

They go by a few names: Rolo pretzel turtles, pretzel turtles, or caramel pretzel bites. The “turtle” name comes from the classic pecan turtle candy, which this recipe mimics with a pretzel base instead of a full caramel-pecan cluster.

Is Rolo candy still being made?

Yes, Rolo candy is still widely available in most grocery stores, Target, Walmart, and online. They’re typically stocked year-round in the candy aisle and in larger bags near the holidays.

Oh my! I made these with my children and they are so delicious! We made a huge error though….we forgot to line the baking sheet and couldn’t get the cookies off. ????????????. So funny! Thanks for the lovely, simple recipe. Next time, these we are going to nail this.

Werthers finally emailed me, the caramels are no longer made. Bummer, they were good.

Where did you buy the werthers baking caramels, I live in Dayton Ohio. The werthers company never answers my emails. So I ordered them through Amazon.

These look great, and so simple! I’ve seen a couple of different ideas using caramels and pretzels like this, but I’m worried that the cooled product/leftover candies will be tough or hard to bite — like a salted caramel chocolate chip cookie I made recently; great out the the oven, but with the older cookies the caramel pieces were like hard candies. Thoughts? Ideas to avoid that? Thanks!

Wow this looks so yummy! I’ve made something similar before, pretzels Rolos and pecans, but this version looks great! You seem to make so many wonderful recipes! I’m cohosting a link up I think you’d be interested in, Delcious Dish Tuesday, it opens up at 12am EST TOMORROW. I hope to see another one of your Delcious recipes tomorrow!
